From the director of the acclaimed movie "A Separation"
"Gripping as sheer storytelling, the plot smoothly raises some unusual moral questions. It touches on masculine honor, on the way a thoughtless laugh can wound someone’s feelings, on the extent to which we try to take charge of others’ fates. I can’t recall another film that so deeply examines the risks of telling lies to spare someone grief." - David Bordwell

"To many, the film’s first half may seem mannered, even boring, with the old pals, particularly the men, indulging in obnoxious, condescending behavior. But after an alarming incident at the 45-minute mark, Farhadi ratchets up the tension, and the pic becomes a mystery thriller of sorts that epitomizes the Sir Walter Scott quote, Oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive." - Alissa Simon, Variety

"One of the most remarkable Iranian films to surface in the last few years" - Lee Marshall, Screen Daily

Synopsis - Writer/director Asghar Farhadi offers this revealing look at the Iranian middle class by examining how one simple lie can open up a Pandora's box of problems.

In the wake of his failed marriage in Germany, Ahmad (Shahab Hosseini) returns to Tehran. With the holidays approaching, Ahmad's friend Sepideh (Golshifteh Farahani) organizes a weekend getaway to the Caspian Sea with a group of old college friends. But one member of the group sticks out like a sore thumb: she's a pretty kindergarten teacher named Elly (Taraneh Alidousti), and Sepideh thought she would be a perfect match for Ahmad. In order to rent a spacious beach house for the group to share, Sepideh told the elderly landlady that Ahmad and Elly were newlyweds. But the truth is Elly has never even met Ahmad, and she doesn't share a close bond with the rest of the friends. Strangely enough, on the very first night of the trip Elly naturally endears herself to the tight-knit group. The following day, however, Elly vanishes without a trace, sparking a frantic search that sours the festivities, and revealing the casual deceits that are shared amongst friends.

Synopsis: A young woman in Germany has twenty minutes to find and bring 100,000 Deutschmarks to her boyfriend before he robs a supermarket.

The film begins with Lola (Franka Potente) receiving a phone call from her distraught boyfriend, Manni (Moritz Bleibtreu). He is a small-time criminal and has lost 100,000 marks belonging to his crime boss by accidentally leaving it on a train (Lola was supposed to pick him up, but her moped was stolen while she was buying cigarettes). After the doors of the train closed, he saw a homeless man pick up the bag of money but he was unable to get back onto the train before it left the station. Upon not seeing any trace of his money or the homeless man at the next station, Manni assumes the money is long gone.

Manni has to get the money within 20 minutes before his boss finds out, and plans to rob a nearby supermarket. Lola urges him to wait and tells him she will sort out the money. She decides to ask her father (Herbert Knaup), who is a bank manager .

The main part of the film is divided in three "runs". Each run starts from the same situation but develops differently and has a different outcome. Each run contains various flash-forward sequences, showing how the lives of the people that Lola bumps into develop after the encounter. In each run, those people are affected in different ways.

Synopsis : Teacher and novelist François Bégaudeau plays a version of himself as he negotiates a year with his racially mixed students from a tough Parisian neighborhood.

Teacher François Marin and his colleagues are preparing for another school year teaching at a racially mixed inner city high school in Paris. The teachers talk to each other about their prospective students, both the good and the bad. The teachers collectively want to inspire their students, but each teacher is an individual who will do things in his or her own way to achieve the results they desire. They also have differing viewpoints on the students themselves, and how best to praise and discipline them. The administration of the school tries to be as fair as possible, which includes having student representatives sit on the student evaluation committee. Marin's class this year of fourteen and fifteen year olds is no different than previous years, although the names and faces have changed. Marin tries to get through to his students, sometimes with success and sometimes resulting in utter failure...

Films Basis : It is based on the 2006 novel of the same name by François Bégaudeau. The novel is a semi-autobiographical account of Bégaudeau's experiences as a French language and literature teacher in a middle school in the 20th arrondissement of Paris, particularly illuminating his struggles with "problem children" Esmerelda (Esmeralda Ouertani), Khoumba (Rachel Regulier), and Souleymane (Franck Keïta). The film stars Bégaudeau himself in the role of the teacher.

Das weiße Band - Eine deutsche aka The White Ribbon (Germany , 2009)

A German children's story - If real life were ever as cold, bleak and irredeemable as the fictional realms depicted by The White Ribbon, it wouldn't be worth living a day longer
"It Feels Like a Classic Even as You Are Watching It For The First Time" - Scott Foundas, LA Weekly

"Chilling and Resonant" - Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly

"A Tale of the Past That Points to the Future; A Picture That Will Be Viewed and Discussed for Decades to Come" - Xan Brooks, The Guardian

Synopsis : The drama darkly depicts society and family in a northern German village just before World War I. According to Haneke, the film is about "the origin of every type of terrorism, be it of political or religious nature."

The White Ribbon comes with a tagline 'A German children's story'. It's one of the film's many ironies. For, unlike the innocence and purity (words that come up twice in the film in a very disturbing context) of childhood, the young ones in this seemingly idyllic setting are anything but that. It all starts with the local doctor's horse tripping over a wire that's deliberately planted in his path. A series of bizarre accidents follow and the population of the village is unable to unravel the mystery. The Baron who employs half of them and the pastor who looks after their spiritual well-being are the two power centres of the community -- both equally authoritarian in their own realms. The Baron is hated for his selfishness, the icy pastor cuts a sorry figure as a vicious tyrant who rules his own brood at home with a iron whip. The doctor, the third important spoke in the wheel, persecutes his mistress with savage indifference and sexually abuses his teenage daughter.

These are the upholders of morality and tradition and the dispensers of values. Is it any wonder that the generation that grew up under their watch voted for Nazism and perhaps joined its ranks as well? Haneke alludes to this link between this oppressive community and the emergence of a totalitarian state in Germany as a reaction to the humiliating defeat in the First World War. And then perhaps, he also uses this tale about extremely aberrant behaviour set in a very 'normal' community to suggest that every society on earth has the potential to morph into a savage mass turning violent on innocents to avenge their own degradation.

In 1943, as Hitler continues to wage war across Europe, a group of college students mount an underground resistance movement in Munich. Dedicated expressly to the downfall of the monolithic Third Reich war machine, they call themselves the White Rose. One of its few female members, Sophie Scholl is captured during a dangerous mission to distribute pamphlets on campus with her brother Hans. Unwavering in her convictions and loyalty to the White Rose, her cross-examination by the Gestapo quickly escalates into a searing test of wills as Scholl delivers a passionate call to freedom and personal responsibility that is both haunting and timeless.

The Revolt that Stirred the World!
An account of the bloodiest revolution in modern history.
"A Most Extraordinary Film" - New York Times
"The most emotionally powerful revolutionary epic since Eisenstein's Potemkin!" - Pauline Kael, The New Yorker

Synopsis : The Battle of Algiers  is a 1966 war film based on occurrences during the Algerian War (1954–62) against French colonial occupation in North Africa, the most prominent being the titular Battle of Algiers. The film has been critically celebrated and often taken, by insurgent groups and states alike, as an important commentary on urban guerilla warfare. The highly dramatic film is about the organisation of a guerrilla movement and the methods used to annihilate it by the colonial power.

A film commissioned by the Algerian government that shows the Algerian revolution from both sides. The French foreign legion has left Vietnam in defeat and has something to prove. The Algerians are seeking independence. The two clash. The torture used by the French is contrasted with the Algerian's use of bombs in soda shops. A look at war as a nasty thing that harms and sullies everyone who participates in it.

Synopsis: Red Cliff is a Chinese epic war film based on the Battle of Red Cliffs (208-209 AD) and events during the end of the Han Dynasty and immediately prior to the Three Kingdoms period in ancient China.

RED CLIFF opens as power hungry Prime Minister-turned-General Cao Cao (Zhang Fengyi) seeks permission from the Han dynasty Emperor to organize a southward-bound mission designed to crush the two troublesome warlords who stand in his way, Liu Bei (You Yong) and Sun Quan (Chang Chen). As the expedition gets underway, Cao Cao's troops rain destruction on Liu Bei's army, forcing him into retreat. Liu Bei's military strategist Zhuge Liang (Takeshi Kaneshiro) knows that the rebels' only hope for survival is to form an alliance with rival warlord Sun Quan, and reaches out to Sun Quan's trusted advisor, war hero Zhou Yu (Tony Leung). Vastly outnumbered by Cao Cao's brutal, fast-approaching army, the warlords band together to mount a heroic campaign – unrivaled in history – that changes the face of China forever. A massive hit in Asia and the most expensive Asian film production of all time, RED CLIFF is a breathtaking war epic that marks the triumphant return of John Woo.

A Family Apart ... Will Come Together

"Transcendent ... completely absorbing , so sure of its own scale and scope that while you're watching it the rest of the world fades into irrelevance" - A.O. Scott , The New York Times

"The closest thing to a masterpiece ... A universal, deeply felt portrait of middle-class family life ... Comparable to Yasujiro Ozu's 1953 masterpiece, 'TOKYO STORY.' " - Stephen Holden, The New York Times

"Painful family issues are more likely to stay beneath the surface, known to everyone but not spoken of. Still Walking, a magnificent new film from Japan, is very wise about that, and very true." - Roger Ebert, Chicago-Sun Times

Synopsis : The film is a portrait of a family over roughly 24 hours as they commemorate the death of one member.

The lyrical, profoundly moving Still Walking (Aruitemo aruitemo) is contemporary Japanese master Hirokazu Kore-eda’s most personal work to date. Created as a tribute to his late mother, the film depicts one day in the life of the Yokoyamas, gathered together for a commemorative ritual whose nature only gradually becomes clear. Rather than focus on big dramatic moments, Kore-eda relies on simple gestures and domestic routines (especially cooking) to evoke a family’s entire life, its deep regrets and its daily joys. Featuring vivid, heartrending performances and a gentle naturalism that harks back to the director’s earlier, documentary work, Still Walking is an extraordinary portrayal of the ties that bind us.
