Synopsis : Yi yi is a Taiwanese film about the emotional struggles of a businessman and the lives of his middle-class Taiwanese family in Taipei seen through three generations.

Yi Yi is an epic story about the Taipei Jian family seen through three different perspectives: the middle-aged father NJ (Nien-Jen Wu), the young son Yang-Yang (Jonathan Chang), and the teenage daughter, Ting-Ting (Kelly Lee). The three-hour piece starts with a wedding, concludes with a funeral, and contemplates areas of human life in between. The father, NJ, is unsatisfied with his work and the desire of his business partners to enter into a deal with a well-known Japanese videogame company. While his partners are only concerned about making money, NJ finds that his honest nature is unappreciated in the commercial realm. To his surprise, he finds a connection with the Japanese software mogul, Ota. A former old flame, Sherry, tries to walk into his life after a chance reunion. His youngest son has troubles at school with his teachers, while his daughter has to handle a love triangle involving her friend next door and her troubled boyfriend. All three try to deal with their problems while also caring for NJ's aged mother-in-law, who is in a coma, and in the absence of NJ's wife, who has left for a Buddhist retreat after facing a midlife crisis. In addition, A-Di, NJ's overweight brother-in-law who marries a starlet at the start of the film, has to wrestle with his demanding wife and a former love, complicating matters within this extended family.

Synopsis : A dramatization of the final days of Sophie Scholl, one of the most famous members of the German World War II anti-Nazi resistance movement, The White Rose.

In 1943, as Hitler continues to wage war across Europe, a group of college students mount an underground resistance movement in Munich. Dedicated expressly to the downfall of the monolithic Third Reich war machine, they call themselves the White Rose. One of its few female members, Sophie Scholl is captured during a dangerous mission to distribute pamphlets on campus with her brother Hans. Unwavering in her convictions and loyalty to the White Rose, her cross-examination by the Gestapo quickly escalates into a searing test of wills as Scholl delivers a passionate call to freedom and personal responsibility that is both haunting and timeless.

Do not forget that every people deserves the regime it is willing to endure!

Every individual human being has a claim to a useful and just state, which secures freedom of the individual as well as the good of the whole.

The Revolt that Stirred the World!
An account of the bloodiest revolution in modern history.
"A Most Extraordinary Film" - New York Times
"The most emotionally powerful revolutionary epic since Eisenstein's Potemkin!" - Pauline Kael, The New Yorker

Synopsis : The Battle of Algiers  is a 1966 war film based on occurrences during the Algerian War (1954–62) against French colonial occupation in North Africa, the most prominent being the titular Battle of Algiers. The film has been critically celebrated and often taken, by insurgent groups and states alike, as an important commentary on urban guerilla warfare. The highly dramatic film is about the organisation of a guerrilla movement and the methods used to annihilate it by the colonial power.

A film commissioned by the Algerian government that shows the Algerian revolution from both sides. The French foreign legion has left Vietnam in defeat and has something to prove. The Algerians are seeking independence. The two clash. The torture used by the French is contrasted with the Algerian's use of bombs in soda shops. A look at war as a nasty thing that harms and sullies everyone who participates in it.

Synopsis: Red Cliff is a Chinese epic war film based on the Battle of Red Cliffs (208-209 AD) and events during the end of the Han Dynasty and immediately prior to the Three Kingdoms period in ancient China.

RED CLIFF opens as power hungry Prime Minister-turned-General Cao Cao (Zhang Fengyi) seeks permission from the Han dynasty Emperor to organize a southward-bound mission designed to crush the two troublesome warlords who stand in his way, Liu Bei (You Yong) and Sun Quan (Chang Chen). As the expedition gets underway, Cao Cao's troops rain destruction on Liu Bei's army, forcing him into retreat. Liu Bei's military strategist Zhuge Liang (Takeshi Kaneshiro) knows that the rebels' only hope for survival is to form an alliance with rival warlord Sun Quan, and reaches out to Sun Quan's trusted advisor, war hero Zhou Yu (Tony Leung). Vastly outnumbered by Cao Cao's brutal, fast-approaching army, the warlords band together to mount a heroic campaign – unrivaled in history – that changes the face of China forever. A massive hit in Asia and the most expensive Asian film production of all time, RED CLIFF is a breathtaking war epic that marks the triumphant return of John Woo.

A Family Apart ... Will Come Together

"Transcendent ... completely absorbing , so sure of its own scale and scope that while you're watching it the rest of the world fades into irrelevance" - A.O. Scott , The New York Times

"The closest thing to a masterpiece ... A universal, deeply felt portrait of middle-class family life ... Comparable to Yasujiro Ozu's 1953 masterpiece, 'TOKYO STORY.' " - Stephen Holden, The New York Times

"Painful family issues are more likely to stay beneath the surface, known to everyone but not spoken of. Still Walking, a magnificent new film from Japan, is very wise about that, and very true." - Roger Ebert, Chicago-Sun Times

Synopsis : The film is a portrait of a family over roughly 24 hours as they commemorate the death of one member.

The lyrical, profoundly moving Still Walking (Aruitemo aruitemo) is contemporary Japanese master Hirokazu Kore-eda’s most personal work to date. Created as a tribute to his late mother, the film depicts one day in the life of the Yokoyamas, gathered together for a commemorative ritual whose nature only gradually becomes clear. Rather than focus on big dramatic moments, Kore-eda relies on simple gestures and domestic routines (especially cooking) to evoke a family’s entire life, its deep regrets and its daily joys. Featuring vivid, heartrending performances and a gentle naturalism that harks back to the director’s earlier, documentary work, Still Walking is an extraordinary portrayal of the ties that bind us.

Z (France , 1969)

Release Year - 1969
Country - Algeria
Genres - Crime | Drama | History
IMDB page

First movie to be nominated for Oscars in both the best foreign-language category and the regular best picture category
"An Extraordinary Thriller! One of the fastest, most exciting melodramas ever made" - Pauline Kael

"Unbearably Exciting! Z is at the same time a political cry of rage and a brilliant suspense thriller!" - Roger Ebert

Synopsis : Following the murder of a prominent leftist, an investigator tries to uncover the truth while government officials attempt to cover up their roles.

The story of Z began on May 22, 1963, when a Greek politician named Gregoris Lambrakis served as keynote speaker at an anti-war meeting in Thessaloniki and was immediately thereafter whacked on the head by a couple of right-wing extremists. He died a few days later. Greece’s right-wing government was suspected of supporting the assassination, and subsequent investigation revealed that the military and the police force had connections to the extremists. The country’s leftist movement, long marginalized by the authoritarian government, had had enough of these shenanigans. Lambrakis became a symbol for their cause, which proved to be significant in Greece’s political history over the next several years.

The name Z came from the Greek protest slogan “ZEI,” meaning “he [Lambrakis] lives!”

Films Basis - Based on the 1966 novel of the same name by Vassilis Vassilikos

Interesting Facts
  • The movie starts with onscreen titles that say, in translation, "Any similarity to real persons and events is not coincidental. It is INTENTIONAL."
  • Costa-Gavras even set the action on May 22, the same date of the Lambrakis attack.
  • The investigating magistrate in the movie (actor Jean-Louis Trintignant) is an analogue of Christos Sartzetakis, who was 22 years later appointed President of Greece by democratically-elected parliamentarians.
  • Made by a Greek-born director and based on events in Greek politics, it was filmed mostly in Algeria and all the characters speak French. The movie never explicitly names which country it takes place in.

Special Mention
  • Costa-Gavras was the master of the political thriller for a couple decades, with Z as a prime example of how to do it right. Films like The French Connection (1971) and The Conversation (1974) were clearly influenced by Z‘s visual style; hand-held cameras, suggesting a documentary feel, became the norm for this genre.

The Flying Daggers steal from the rich and give to the poor, gaining the support of the locals.
