PASSIONATE FILM MAKING AT ITS BEST" - Chris Gore, Film Threat

Synopsis: A young woman in Germany has twenty minutes to find and bring 100,000 Deutschmarks to her boyfriend before he robs a supermarket.

The film begins with Lola (Franka Potente) receiving a phone call from her distraught boyfriend, Manni (Moritz Bleibtreu). He is a small-time criminal and has lost 100,000 marks belonging to his crime boss by accidentally leaving it on a train (Lola was supposed to pick him up, but her moped was stolen while she was buying cigarettes). After the doors of the train closed, he saw a homeless man pick up the bag of money but he was unable to get back onto the train before it left the station. Upon not seeing any trace of his money or the homeless man at the next station, Manni assumes the money is long gone.

Manni has to get the money within 20 minutes before his boss finds out, and plans to rob a nearby supermarket. Lola urges him to wait and tells him she will sort out the money. She decides to ask her father (Herbert Knaup), who is a bank manager .

The main part of the film is divided in three "runs". Each run starts from the same situation but develops differently and has a different outcome. Each run contains various flash-forward sequences, showing how the lives of the people that Lola bumps into develop after the encounter. In each run, those people are affected in different ways.

Synopsis : Teacher and novelist François Bégaudeau plays a version of himself as he negotiates a year with his racially mixed students from a tough Parisian neighborhood.

Teacher François Marin and his colleagues are preparing for another school year teaching at a racially mixed inner city high school in Paris. The teachers talk to each other about their prospective students, both the good and the bad. The teachers collectively want to inspire their students, but each teacher is an individual who will do things in his or her own way to achieve the results they desire. They also have differing viewpoints on the students themselves, and how best to praise and discipline them. The administration of the school tries to be as fair as possible, which includes having student representatives sit on the student evaluation committee. Marin's class this year of fourteen and fifteen year olds is no different than previous years, although the names and faces have changed. Marin tries to get through to his students, sometimes with success and sometimes resulting in utter failure...

Films Basis : It is based on the 2006 novel of the same name by François Bégaudeau. The novel is a semi-autobiographical account of Bégaudeau's experiences as a French language and literature teacher in a middle school in the 20th arrondissement of Paris, particularly illuminating his struggles with "problem children" Esmerelda (Esmeralda Ouertani), Khoumba (Rachel Regulier), and Souleymane (Franck Keïta). The film stars Bégaudeau himself in the role of the teacher.

Das weiße Band - Eine deutsche aka The White Ribbon (Germany , 2009)

A German children's story - If real life were ever as cold, bleak and irredeemable as the fictional realms depicted by The White Ribbon, it wouldn't be worth living a day longer
"It Feels Like a Classic Even as You Are Watching It For The First Time" - Scott Foundas, LA Weekly

"Chilling and Resonant" - Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly

"A Tale of the Past That Points to the Future; A Picture That Will Be Viewed and Discussed for Decades to Come" - Xan Brooks, The Guardian

Synopsis : The drama darkly depicts society and family in a northern German village just before World War I. According to Haneke, the film is about "the origin of every type of terrorism, be it of political or religious nature."

The White Ribbon comes with a tagline 'A German children's story'. It's one of the film's many ironies. For, unlike the innocence and purity (words that come up twice in the film in a very disturbing context) of childhood, the young ones in this seemingly idyllic setting are anything but that. It all starts with the local doctor's horse tripping over a wire that's deliberately planted in his path. A series of bizarre accidents follow and the population of the village is unable to unravel the mystery. The Baron who employs half of them and the pastor who looks after their spiritual well-being are the two power centres of the community -- both equally authoritarian in their own realms. The Baron is hated for his selfishness, the icy pastor cuts a sorry figure as a vicious tyrant who rules his own brood at home with a iron whip. The doctor, the third important spoke in the wheel, persecutes his mistress with savage indifference and sexually abuses his teenage daughter.

These are the upholders of morality and tradition and the dispensers of values. Is it any wonder that the generation that grew up under their watch voted for Nazism and perhaps joined its ranks as well? Haneke alludes to this link between this oppressive community and the emergence of a totalitarian state in Germany as a reaction to the humiliating defeat in the First World War. And then perhaps, he also uses this tale about extremely aberrant behaviour set in a very 'normal' community to suggest that every society on earth has the potential to morph into a savage mass turning violent on innocents to avenge their own degradation.
